HOUSE SF

Situated on the southern edge of Chapuis Park on a lofty elevation, flanked to the north and west by majestic trees, the building plot slopes steeply to the south and west, offering unobstructed views of the Allgäu Alps to the south, the accompanying mountain river Iller, the Burghalde hill opposite to the west, as well as the nearby St. Mang Church and the more distant St. Lawrence Basilica, the two most important ecclesiastical buildings in the imperial and abbey town of Kempten.

A simple, elongated, wooden building volume reflects the magnificent view with its façades, which are consistently transparent on the viewing sides, and appears to float above the table-like base floor, which is dug into the slope.

Cantilevering upwards on all sides, interlocking spatially with the slope, the modular beam-rib system automatically draws the floor plan disposition and the generous glazing on the long and short sides and, through its visible, filigree structure, creates a warm, welcoming spatial atmosphere, which structurally and materially interacts strongly with the surrounding trees and the dramatic views.
