HOUSE W

Martinszell, which belongs to the municipality of Waltenhofen, is located halfway between Kempten/Allgäu and Immenstadt. The old village extends as a roadside settlement on the eastern slope of a ridge running in a north-south direction. The valley floor below, which is used as pastureland, is crossed by the course of the river Iller. A view of Grünten and the Oberstdorf mountains rounds off the typical Allgäu village character.

The building located in the area of the village extension is analogous to the traditional construction method of rural hillside houses in the region: the timber construction placed on a solid base. From the first floor dug into the gravel slope (with garage, cellar rooms and a granny apartment that can be added), a single-flight staircase leads to the wooden structure of the upper floor, which projects far over the valley side.

This is layered like an onion, from the rough outer larch shell with a three-sided walkway to the façade level in spruce (with floor-to-ceiling lift-and-slide doors) and the inner service core (including kitchen, bathroom and WC) in plasterboard. The house stands in a meadow with fruit trees, which also reflects rural models. A gabion shoring on the hillside exposes the nature of the slope and also serves as a support for solar panels, which feed the underfloor heating inside the house.

The subtle relationship to the neighboring Zugschwerdt house sets the building apart from the usual detached single-family house construction and attempts to restore a sustainable regional identity to the village extension of Martinszell.
