"Can a hydroelectric power plant achieve urban repair and can the use of renewable energy be designed in a sensual way? I was fascinated by the complexity of this project. The unexpected becomes a matter of course, the necessary becomes an aesthetic feature. The design of infrastructure projects is still not always the task of architecture, it is all too often done en passant. With a seemingly light architectural language for a given technology, the architects have created a place that goes beyond the construction of a power station and greatly enhances the industrial site in terms of urban development, even giving it a new identity. This is supported by the new, continuous footpath and cycle path that runs directly alongside the new power station along the River Iller. The analogy to the exposed Nagelfluh banks, which line parts of the Iller, and the symbolization of the water dynamics are skilfully staged in the approximately 100-metre-long large sculpture.
However, the organic architectural language leaves room for a variety of associations - this, among other things, is what makes the installation so appealing. The sequence of paths, exterior and interior spaces creates an exciting spatial experience that is enhanced by changing light conditions. The various functions are legible in their formulations. Despite the self-confident architectural language, the new building blends harmoniously into the listed ensemble. The integration of the filigree iron footbridge, which connects the buildings of the spinning mill and weaving mill across the river, is also a success. For the jury, this building is urban and landscape design, a successful approach to monument preservation and an architectural gem.
It shows that an industrial building can also meet the requirements of sustainable building culture with flying colors." (Laudation by Günther Hoffmann, German Architecture Prize)
